Safaricom Launches Loyalty Promotion to Reward Every M-PESA Customer

Safaricom today launched a loyalty promotion that will be rewarding all M-PESA customers and agents. Named “Maisha Ni M-PESA Tu”, the promotion will be rewarding customers every time they send or receive money, transfer money from any bank account to M-PESA and for all Lipa Na M-PESA transactions.

“M-PESA has really grown from a simple service that helps customers to send money anywhere in Kenya to provide benefits in different ways to over 28 million Kenyans day in day out. This growth has come from the back of persistent innovation from our staff and partners, and more importantly from the attitude of Kenyans to grow and support such an innovation. This promotion plans to thank and reward our customers for their support throughout the 11 years of the service,” said Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, Director – Financial Services, Safaricom.

The promotion will be running for 10 weeks beginning 18th June 2018 and will reach over 28 million customers qualifying for the chance to win one of 7 apartments. M-PESA agents will also stand a chance to win one of eight grand prizes of Kshs 1 million in cash. In addition, both customers and agents will stand to win more than Kshs 300 million through weekly prizes.

During the promotion, customers will be earning 10 points for every Kshs 100 transacted while agents will earn 1 point for every Kshs 100 deposited. All M-PESA customers who participate in the promotion will have the chance to redeem their points for bundles, talk time minutes or SMS. Customers can check their points, winnings and surprise rewards by dialing *444*0#

Since it was launched for over 11 years ago, M-PESA has grown to over 28 million customers, over 156,000 agents and over 101,000 Lipa Na M-PESA merchants. Over 40 banks and financial institutions have also joined into the service, allowing Kenyans to deposit or withdraw money from their bank or SACCO accounts and M-PESA.

In the year 2017, Safaricom created M-PESA on the mySafaricom app, which allows customers to use the service through smartphone applications. Over 2 million customers have downloaded the app since then.

Safaricom also announced the creation of a modernised set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in the year 2017. The APIs are available through the Daraja platform, which enables any Kenyan developer or business to integrate their applications and services to M-PESA services.
